General Description

Main Duties

What will the apprentice be doing?

The Apprentice Plater will be taught the following:

  • Tack welding
  • Cutting steel using oxy Acetylene equipment
  • Reading of and understanding of engineering drawings
  • ability to measure, mark off items of steel to reflect what drawing requires
  • Fabrication of assemblies to reflect what drawing requires
  • Using a variety of mechanical grinders. 5” 7” & 9”
  • Drilling using a mixture of Rota broach and pedestal drills
  • Using a mechanical “Quickie” burner and tubular burner
  • Have fully competency in usage of on site overhead cranes
  • Using a variety of measuring tools including dumpy levels and total station
  • Fork truck licence
  • Use of cherry picker or scissor lift if qualified
  • Basic rigging using pull lifts and chain blocks
  • Work at height
  • Full use of all PPE Boots/overalls/glasses/ear defenders/hard hat/air fed mask and gloves

Examples of Standard Job Functions

  • Demonstrate familiarity of knowledge of and compliance to safety practices, all Company procedures, technical standards and method statements to ensure implementation of best practise.
  • Be familiar with and apply all relevant risk assessments for the work in hand.
  • To conduct any other reasonable request from a Foreman/Supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean working environment.

  • On completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be a timeserved Fabricator (plater)
  • The training experience at Smulders will proved the candidate with excellent fabrication skills

This role may involve working out doors, working at heights and in confined spaces


About the Employer

In 2016, Smulders opened a new production facility in Newcastle upon Tyne. This facility is mostly used for the production and assembly of foundations and substations for offshore wind farms. Location Smulders Projects UK is located in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. The yard has an ideal location next to the Tyne with a direct access to the North Sea. The yard has 3 big construction areas with 3 load-out quays. Production facilities The yard in Newcastle covers 32 ha and has a covered production surface of 35,000 m², an open fabrication and assembly surface of 104,000 m². This yard is equipped with a set of gantry cranes (2 x 600 tons) and a large ring crane (1,600 tons). The yard is equipped such that it can handle structures that due to size and weight exceed the capacities of the Hoboken yard. Smulders Projects UK has a load-out capacity of 13,000 tons.
