TDR Trust has been dedicated to fostering talent, supporting the industry, and ensuring a sustainable future for engineering, manufacturing, and science. Established with the mission of developing a world-class skills pool, TDR has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of thousands of apprentices and professionals, creating strong links between education and industry.
Our History
TDR’s origins trace back to 1882, when William Doxford, a renowned Victorian engineer, founded the North East Coast Engineering Trust to ensure that future generations would inherit vital engineering skills. His vision of creating a lasting skills legacy was realised through a dedicated fund, laying the foundation for regional engineering excellence.
Fast-forward to the 1990s, and the industry took a bold step forward by launching the TDR Trust—an independent charitable trust committed to addressing the evolving needs of the engineering sector. With TDR Training as a wholly owned trading subsidiary, the Trust has remained independent, forward-thinking, and responsive to the demands of both apprentices and employers.
In 2002, TDR partnered with the Doxford charity, uniting their shared goal of inspiring young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. By 2009, this collaboration culminated in a full merger, reinforcing TDR’s position as a leading industry-focused training and workforce development provider.
Supporting Industry and the Community
Since its inception, TDR Trust has established itself as a trusted source of advice, training and development for both individuals and businesses. Through strong partnerships with employers, educational institutions and other charitable organisations, TDR has facilitated:
- Apprenticeship programs that bridge the skills gap and provide hands-on experience to aspiring professionals.
- The Ron Dodd TDR Scholarship, which grants cash awards to individuals or organisations excelling in engineering, manufacturing or science.
- Workforce training initiatives ensure businesses remain competitive by upskilling their employees.
- Community engagement programs encourage young people to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Looking to the Future
While TDR Trust takes great pride in its heritage, it focuses on driving innovation and skills development for future generations. The trust continues to evolve, ensuring that today’s apprentices and professionals have the knowledge and experience needed to excel in their careers. At TDR, we stand by our motto: ‘By Science, Industry and Honour’. It is a testament to our commitment to excellence. This motto dates back to 1884 and is still proudly displayed on the certificates of achievement awarded to our learners today.
