NVQ Level 3 Machining
NVQ L3 Machining
Course Overview
The EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Machining (Research & Development) is a work-based qualification designed to formally recognise the occupational competence of advanced machinists working within precision engineering, manufacturing, and R&D environments. Awarded by EAL, the specialist awarding body for engineering qualifications, this programme validates a learner’s ability to set, operate, and programme machining equipment to produce high-precision and complex components.
Learners will develop competence across core engineering practices including health and safety compliance, engineering communication, and efficient workflow management. The qualification supports both conventional machining pathways such as manual milling and turning, as well as advanced CNC operations including programming, setting, and operation in research, development, and prototype manufacturing environments.
Assessment is conducted entirely in the workplace, ensuring learners demonstrate real occupational competence through live production tasks rather than formal written examinations.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, learners will be able to:
- Apply health, safety, and regulatory requirements within machining environments
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and geometric tolerances
- Set up and operate conventional and CNC machining equipment safely
- Program and/or operate CNC machinery for component manufacture
- Produce precision components to tight tolerances and quality standards
- Select appropriate cutting tools, materials, and machining parameters
- Inspect finished components using precision measuring instruments
- Demonstrate competence within a machining or R&D manufacturing role
