Combined Milling and Turning
Combined Manual Machining Course – Turning & Milling
Course Overview:
The Combined Manual Machining Course is a 4 day, hands-on training programme that equips participants with foundational skills in both manual turning (centre lathe) and milling operations. Ideal for apprentices, trainees, and technicians, this course blends theory, practical exercises, and competence assessments to develop the confidence and accuracy required for precision machining.
Course Schedule:
Day 1 – Manual Centre Lathe (Turning): Introduction & Setup
- Introduction to manual machining: Health & Safety, hazard identification, PPE requirements
- Lathe setup and shutdown: Identification of lathe components, controls, RPM/feed rates, and correct work/tool holding
Day 2 – Centre Lathe: Operations & Assessment
- Turning operations: Planning operations, performing various turning techniques, component machining, tips, and use of measuring equipment
- Troubleshooting: Recognising and correcting specification defects
- Practical competence test to confirm learning
Day 3 – Manual Milling: Introduction & Setup
- Introduction to manual milling: Health & Safety, hazard identification, PPE requirements
- Machine setup/shutdown: Parts of milling machine, controls, RPM/feed rates, and correct work/tool holding
Day 4 – Milling Operations & Assessment
- Milling operations: Material preparation, operation planning, component machining, tips, and use of measuring equipment
- Troubleshooting: Recognising and correcting specification defects
- Practical competence test to confirm learning
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will have gained practical experience and competence in both manual turning and milling, including machine setup, safe operation, precision machining, and troubleshooting skills essential for real-world manufacturing environments.
Duration: 4 days
What you'll achieve
TDR Certificate of competence will be awarded upon completion of the training course.
