February 2009 Archives

This is usually a two year apprenticeship programme aimed at laboratory technicians in either an industrial or educational setting.

Apprentices are employed by the company from day one and can be trained in their own field of expertise.  The Apprentice will spend one day a week at college to gain a BTEC National Certificate in Applied Science.  The Apprentice will also complete an NVQ in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities with either industrial or educational standards.  The Level 3 NVQ for an Advanced Apprenticeship contains 5 mandatory units and 3 optional units which can be selected to fit into the company's requirements.  The NVQ is work based and is assessed by a qualified assessor from TDR.

Apprenticeships are aimed at age 16+ and can be also utilised with existing older staff who have not already achieved these level of qualifications.

Why go through TDR?

science.jpgTDR facilitate and manage the Advanced Apprenticeship programme so that the employers don't have to.

TDR have a robust recruitment programme to pre select suitable candidates.  This involves an application process including an interview and some basic numeracy, communication and science testing.  CV's of successful candidates are then sent to the employers so that they can implement their own selection process.

TDR arrange for registration for all elements of the Apprenticeship and monitor college progress.  Qualified staff assess the NVQ competencies in the workplace.  Twelve weekly reviews are also carried out to ensure good progress is being made by the learner at work and at college.

There is no cost to the employer other than the Apprenticeship Salary for which guidelines are given by the LSC.
